“Speak up, and not shut up”
Have you ever stumbled upon an organisation that unlocks a world of opportunities? Meet Neeti, a Medical Practitioner and Co-Founder of Firefly Community, whose journey with Rubaroo blossomed from a simple partnership to a whole new world of possibilities. Let’s dive into this transformational journey – from discovering a welcoming community at Rubaroo to finding their voice as an advocate for change.
Finding a Home in Rubaroo’s Vibrant Community
It was 2017-2018 when Neeti was introduced to Rubaroo and conversed with Monisha, Rashmi, and Shubhi. Looking to establish the way forward and understand the organisation better, Neeti collaborated with Rubaroo for Out and About in 2018, their first event.
“I remember coming to Rubaroo, meeting Monisha and the team, and always playing songs. We used to share plates and have incredible conversations. Rashmi was the first person I spoke to in Rubaroo, and since then, they’ve had a terrific support network. I remember our first collaboration – Out and About, in 2018.”
Stepping Out of Comfort Zones, Finding Her Voice
Neeti emphasises the safe space created by Rubaroo to explore their identity and opinions. Participating in ELP and COVID relief initiatives amid the 14-hour shifts, Neeti shares how they yearned to do more, even after long hours.
“I used to spend 2-3 hours daily with these kids from rural backgrounds and implement the MLMF curriculum. While technology was a challenge, these children kept breaking that barrier through their enthusiasm and questioned many things – which helped me a lot as a medical student – at the time.”
This newfound confidence challenged Neeti to advocate for their beliefs and embrace perspectives that may not necessarily align with their thoughts. Neeti had already embraced their gender identity before joining Rubaroo, but the organisation further empowered them to advocate for change.
“Being born a female at birth, you’re innately taught not to speak up or talk, and it’s so ingrained that you don’t realise it. That fear is always there. But Rubaroo gave me the courage to speak and not shut up.”
Looking Back, Moving Forward
Reflecting on their journey, Neeti emphasises the importance of enjoying the process. “Take a chill pill and relax – enjoy the ride,” they advise young changemakers. They also envision using their medical expertise to contribute to initiatives like reproductive health education, drawing from the valuable skills and perspectives gained at Rubaroo.
Neeti’s story is a testament to the transformative power of Rubaroo. It’s a space where young people can find their voice, challenge themselves, and become agents of positive change. As Neeti embarks on the next chapter of their journey, one thing is sure: the impact of Rubaroo will continue to resonate in their life and work.
