Bhaskar’s Journey with Rubaroo – Learnings and Beyond

Bhaskar - Rubaroo

Driven by an insatiable hunger to learn and grow, Bhaskar’s journey with Rubaroo began in 2021 with the “Rubaroo with Gender” (RWG) workshop. This first experience marked the beginning of a transformative path where he would take on multiple roles as an intern, facilitator, and active participant in programs like Safarnama and the Experiential Learning Program (ELP).

“For me, Rubaroo is a non-judgmental space where I can share my ideas, hear other people’s perspectives, and learn from them. It became like a temple of learning where I draw inspiration.”

From workshop to internship

After attending the RWG workshop, Bhaskar felt inspired to explore further. The workshop’s foundational concepts sparked his curiosity, leading him to pursue an internship with Rubaroo. During his time as an intern, he delved deeper into critical subjects such as gender, sexuality, consent, and power, which the ELP workshop introduced in greater detail.

“I took a leap into the internship, and it allowed me to take on different roles and responsibilities. The sessions on gender and power were eye-opening, giving me a richer understanding of the complexities in these areas.”

Overcoming challenges and developing skills

Though his internship eventually came to an end, Bhaskar encountered a tough period financially. Recognizing his commitment and challenges, the Rubaroo team invited him to participate in the Safarnama program, where he earned a stipend by facilitating adolescent curriculum sessions.

Throughout his time with Rubaroo, Bhaskar honed essential skills such as proposal writing, email communication, and managing finances. He learned to navigate Google Sheets and developed organisational skills that became invaluable in his academic journey as a business analytics student.

“This experience opened doors for me. Writing proposals, managing finances, and sending emails to funders were all new to me. These skills became a cornerstone of my personal and professional growth.”

Need for safe spaces for young people

Reflecting on his time with Rubaroo, Bhaskar emphasised the importance of safe, non-judgmental spaces for young people to learn and grow. “I didn’t have such spaces growing up, and I feel the need for them more now. Rubaroo offers a safe space where young people can explore boundaries and feel valued.”

Bhaskar’s association with Rubaroo has also expanded his awareness of social issues. He learned about gender, identity, and youth agency, values that align deeply with his own. The Rubaroo experience has given him insight into the critical role of youth spaces that embrace diverse perspectives and provide opportunities for meaningful impact.

Reflecting on his journey, Bhaskar shares one piece of advice for future changemakers: “Rubaroo is a safe space—come in with an open mind, maintain boundaries, and embrace the opportunity to grow.”
