For Ashwanth, a final-year student from a rural background, entering the world of social work was not just a leap into a new field but a step into a transformative journey. His first encounter with Rubaroo came through an Instagram post, which led him to apply for their Experiential Learning Programme (ELP) 2023 fellowship. This programme was his gateway to a world of ideas, growth, and impact as he implemented the adolescent curriculum.
“I came across Rubaroo on Instagram and decided to apply for the ELP fellowship. Coming from a rural background, I wasn’t fluent in English, but after joining the program, I’ve seen my language skills improve,” he shares. Despite initial challenges, Ashwanth embraced this opportunity to learn, develop, and connect with young minds through the fellowship.
The journey brought significant personal growth as he moved past language barriers, stepping into a supportive environment where his confidence in communication flourished. This experience with Rubaroo wasn’t just about education; it was about empowerment.
Becoming one with Rubaroo
Being part of Rubaroo has influenced Ashwanth’s life deeply, opening doors to ideas he hadn’t encountered before, including topics like gender equality, social justice, and interfaith dialogue. Each conversation and activity during the program challenged and enriched his worldview, helping him understand societal issues on a broader scale. Through Rubaroo, he engaged in open discussions around sensitive social issues, something he had limited exposure to in his hometown.
“I’ve realised that investing time, empathy, and a willingness to learn can lead to immense growth. Rubaroo taught me about diverse cultures, improved my communication, and strengthened my interpersonal skills,” says Ashwanth.
As he learned from fellow participants and facilitators, Ashwanth found himself evolving. Each workshop and discussion nurtured his curiosity and deepened his awareness. He began developing essential interpersonal skills and learning the art of empathy, understanding different perspectives, and tackling complex issues without judgement.
Broader community engagement and impact
Reflecting on the broader community impact of Rubaroo, Ashwanth acknowledges how the organisation has sparked awareness and change, particularly in addressing gender inequalities. Through its programs, Rubaroo has created a space where young people can critically examine societal norms, question biases, and contribute to a more inclusive society.
“Rubaroo’s efforts have a wider impact by challenging ingrained societal traits and promoting a healthy mindset. It’s about growing by identifying areas of improvement and building better traits,” Ashwanth shares.
Through Rubaroo, he has come to understand that some behaviors and attitudes are inherited from society, while others are shaped through experiences. The journey of learning is continuous, and Rubaroo plays an instrumental role in this by encouraging young minds to question stereotypes and cultivate a mindset of inclusivity and respect. This impact doesn’t just touch individual lives; it creates a ripple effect, spreading awareness and fostering understanding throughout the community.
Advice for young changemakers
Ashwanth’s journey with Rubaroo has left a lasting impression, motivating him to stay engaged in social work and advocacy. He hopes to continue working with Rubaroo on gender-focused projects, feeling that there is much more he can contribute and learn.
To aspiring changemakers, Ashwanth offers heartfelt advice: “Life often gives us moments where we can shape our future—don’t miss them. Embrace every opportunity and explore the world.”
Ashwanth’s story stands as a testament to the impact that supportive spaces like Rubaroo can have on young people. They provide more than skills; they offer purpose, growth, and the confidence to make a difference.
